This weekend saw the 2010 F1 World Championship Series head to Spain for the ninth race of the season, and taking place at the Valencia Street Circuit saw the 2010 European Grand Prix provide another bout of F1 controversy.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel claimed his second win of the season this weekend, adding to his success in the 2010 Malaysia Grand Prix in April.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel claimed his second win of the season this weekend, adding to his success in the 2010 Malaysia Grand Prix in April.
Red Bull took the pole position and the second spot on the grid in qualifying through Vettel and Australian Mark Webber respectively, however it was the latter who grabbed the most headlines.
After a dire start, Webber saw Vettel and Brit Lewis Hamilton take off and in the ninth lap tried to overtake Heikki Kovalainen – and instead ran into the back of him, resulting in Webber twisting and turning through the air in his car, lucky to be able to walk away from the incident in one piece.
The safety car then came out, and with Vettel and Hamilton leading, the McLaren driver was given a drive-through penalty after being investigated for overtaking it – and ended up finishing second.
Teammate to Hamilton, and the defending driver’s champion Jenson Button finished in third place as he kept up with the pace for the majority of the race.
Hamilton is still ahead on the leader board, with teammate Button six points behind, and Vettel in third a further six behind the McLaren drivers.
McLaren are clear on the constructors board with 248 points, while the closest rivals are Red Bull on 218.
Next up on the F1 calendar is the 2010 British Grand Prix, which will take place at the historical Silverstone track on the 11th of July.
